I had originally started reading this, quit, then came back to it when I had nothing else to read. I'm glad I went back to it because it was pretty decent. I am not really into Christian books that preach every little thing to you normally. This one did have a lot of religious stuff, but it was realistic based on the character and time period. You feel more like you're seeing the characters religion and how she would have acted in that time, not having the author push it on you. A debutante type girl from Georgia in 1892 would have been a bible reading woman.
The story is also realistic when it comes to loss. Things were rough at that time. People died, childbirth was risky. I thought the additions of these things definitely give you a better picture of the time period.

I just completed this book and I would recommend it for a quick and easy read. Being from the deep south it was easy for me to imagine the challenges a lady would have had moving from the grace and gentile traditions that had formed her character and rhythm of living to a wild and open territory. I am always amazed at what women young or old had to endure to just survive as this great country was being established. I did not come away feeling I knew the characters and the inter-relationships as much as I would like to have, but it was easy for me to fill in my own suppositions. I recommend this book it is uplifting and will take you out of the rat race that America seems stuck in for this generation. Enjoy....and thanks to the author!
The western states in the early years of America's past had homesteaders who worked hard to carve out a life for themselves. This is a story of a family built not of blood relation, but of liking, loyalty and choosing this way of life. A young woman whose life is upended when her father dies, travels from Georgia to live with her Aunt in Colorado. Though a tragic storm kills her Aunt she finds a new home in this rugged country with her belief that Gods in charge and will help her to live the life that he wants for her.
I, by absolutely no means, disliked this book. On the contrary, I found it charming and sweet with just the perfect amount of romance mixed with tragedy and everyday western ranch life.
However, I could never really get into the meat of this story and get lost in it because of the constant POV shifts. They happened in the middle of paragraphs and sentences and throughout the entirety of the story. I also lost track of quite a few characters because of the little to no interaction with most of them at some point, and then the passing mention of them in other points. It was frustrating and unsettling.
However, as I said at the beginning, I really did like this book. The descriptions were on point and lovely. There was a wonderful balance of tension and development in each plot point, which came to an exquisite ending.
A tried and true happy ending romance with God as the backbone is always a delightful read.
This book captured my attention from beginning to end. I felt like I was present in the story, since the scenes are so well described and it is not difficult to form a vivid picture of what the author has been describing. It is the kind of book that you would not want to put down until you are finished. Although it was written about a former era, I was able to relate to the characters as though they were my friends and neighbors, next door. It is a period of time when life, although difficult seemed to have been simple, but also enjoyable.

It is always a pleasure to learn about the lives of others and how they coped at a time without the conveniences we have grown accustomed to was not present. Stories like this help me to appreciate more the people I am close to and to cherish and enjoy what life has given me.
It was just like Scarlett had her bags packed and suddenly got shipped west for obedience training. With less gun smoke than Louis L'Amour, but I claim... Maggie Brendan better understands the game of the heart.

Paying attention to details is a must when reading this book. Since I've traveled the Colorado mountains in my troubled past, I felt right at home in this story. My mom would have loved to participated in the church organ bazaar gatherings... definitely her cup of tea. Mary was another one of my favorites, but when Crystal got shooting going with her Colt in hand... she became my girl! And ladies, don't despair... her bullets caused way less pushing of the daisies than what's normal in a cowboy telling of 1892. And guys, here's the good news we get to learn how amazing men thinks! But one mystery still remains unsolved... who was it that made a better pie than what Sourdough did?
Hurt and lonely after a deep loss, Crystal headed to the home of a dear aunt in an attempt to figure out where her future would lead her. The Southern lady landed in a "wild west" environment, with those nearby wondering whether or not she could survive in such a world. But not only surviving, but learning to thrive, Crystal's journey made for good reading. I did feel like the quality of writing at the beginning of the book changed to a better story at some point in the middle of the book.
