So we all know that Ellie Cahill is also Liz Czukas, right? And if you didn’t know, you do know. And if you’ve read Czukas’ YA books, then you know they’re light and fluffy and fun and refreshing and my favorites. When Joss Met Matt is exactly that but in NA form. The characters are deeper, the story is more developed, the emotions are more intense, and there is a lot of sex. Exactly what you might expect from a NA book written by Czukas. And I have to say, it was awesome. I’m a big fan of her YA books but this one is my new favorite from her. And not just because of the sex. But because the characters were far easier to get attached to and the relationship between them meant so much more than the ones in her YA books. And don’t take that to mean I don’t like her YA books, because I do and I really hope she’ll write more of those as well, but I think I’m now a bigger fan of her NA book. And I was not expecting that.

In the book When Joss Met Matt, we literally get to watch Matt and Joss’ relationship develop over the seven years that they know each other. The book flips back and forth between their present and their past. And it was done so perfectly, I loved it. We learn so much about their characters over time and their relationships with not just each other but also with the other people they have dated and loved and been friends with. It’s been a long time since I felt like I knew characters as well as I knew Joss and Matt. And along with that, they were also very relatable and real. They both had flaws but were still people I’d like to know in real life. And they were still recognizable by the end of the book. There were no extreme transformations, just a natural maturing that would occur in seven years. And in case I haven’t mentioned it yet, I really loved this book.

I’ve decided, after reading three books by Liz Czukas that I’m going to call her books Sorbet Books. Because whenever I read a book that isn’t that great I can pull one of hers off the shelf and be reminded about how great and fun books can be. And I won’t have to think about how bad and angry the last book I read made me because it won’t be the last book I read anymore. So from now on, whenever I need a quick palate cleanse and a reminder that books can be fun and good at the same time, I’ll be calling on my Liz Czukas/Ellie Cahill books.

I highly recommend When Joss Met Matt. It was fun and real and swoony and funny. There is a lot of sex in it, though, so if that isn’t your thing, I’d stay away from this one. It’s definitely not like her YA books which tend to fall on the younger side of the spectrum. The characters start the book at 18 as college freshman and continue on for seven years and are adults and do adult things. That isn’t meant to turn you away, just to make you aware that this is definitely a new adult book. And I highly recommend it. Reading it just made me happy. It’s rare for me to find a relationship in a book that feels so real and that I loved so much. Joss and Matt are definitely it for me. I hope you’ll get the chance to meet them as well!

When Joss Met Matt A Novel Ellie Cahill 9780553394511 Books Reviews

Definitely couldn't put down the book! Joss is exactly how I am in the personality department. I think she could touch a lot of other women as well! Started the book about 5 hours ago and already finished it.
I think I fell in love with Matt before Joss did. This a is a really well written, sweet story that would make any reader fall in love. I have never read anything like this. “Sorbet sex” is very clever and unique. I also really loved the humor. Joss is super witty and such a relatable character. I highly recommended this read!
I loved this book. Total book hangover. I read it twice. I was so mad at how it was written; only giving glimpses at what was happening in the present. As soon as I thought I was going to get some information I would be thrown into another flashback. It was great, ha ha. I am even considering sorbet sex myself. )
I loved this book. Joss and Matt's relationship is fun and interesting and I love the idea of a "sorbet guy". I loved watching how their relationship developed, even if at times I wanted to smack them for being blind and stupid. Definitely would recommend this book to others for a fun summer read.
3.5 stars

Going back and forth between the past and present was a little difficult for me. I'm not sure why. I guess I didn't need the play by play of their past. I needed a little of it but not as much as the book offered. I thought about skimming the pages which is never a good option.

Joss and Matt lived in the same dorm freshman year of college. They decided to be friends that had sorbet sex. Sex after a break up to clear the palate. As the years wore on it got more complicated but they couldn't give each other up.
I love Liz Czukas (sorry, I mean Ellie Cahill *wink*) and so I knew I would love When Joss Met Matt but I didn’t realize how MUCH I would love it. Her debut novel, ASK AGAIN LATER, totally won me over but WHEN JOSS MET MATT had me totally falling head over heels for these characters, the story, and how much I connected with absolutely everything (and I already have it pre-ordered).

WHEN JOSS MET MATT is everything I want New Adult to be. Always. We first meet the two during Joss’s first years of college and when a good relationship goes bad, she leans more and more on her new friend Matt who also helped her coin the new idea of “sorbet sex” (having sex with someone else after a bad encounter to wipe the slate clean). I’m not shy around sex in books but there are quite a few times in the new adult books that I’ve read that the sex scenes become tawdry and over-the-top and unrealistic, so although there is plenty of sex in WHEN JOSS MET MATT (hey, that is the whole concept of the book…), it never felt silly or awkward to read (well, except when it was supposed to be)!

The characters were fantastic too. I LOVE Joss and have been in her shoes so many times. I just really connected and although I may not have been in the exact same predicaments, everything was just so incredibly relatable no matter what it was. She and Matt are both just totally normal people. No one is over the top sexy or hunky but there’s enough attraction between the two to flirt with that line of best friends vs something more (MY FAV) and see how the two end up.

Books with flashbacks/flashforwards are often “take it or leave it” for me but I loved the back and forth in WHEN JOSS MET MATT. We start to get to know Joss & Matt in college but the story constantly flashes back and forth between their past and their present day (which also made me VERY NERVOUS but in a good way). It takes a great author to really make those scenes fit together plot-wise even though they’re not chronological and I love the way Ellie Cahill handled them.

But really my favorite part was just the overall feel. I loved that it took place in Wisconsin since I’m from Illinois (and one scene in Chicago!) and I felt that Midwestern vibe, which may not be much different than any other setting, but it really helps me connect that much more. Everyone is very down-to-earth and the situations these two ended up in felt like they could happen to me — or HAVE happened to me. The book was funny yet serious, sexy and sweet, and I absolutely love love loved the ending. If you’re not a fan of new adult, PLEASE try this book! I absolutely adored it and it’s one that I think could easily appeal to YA, new adult, and adult fiction lovers alike.
